May 1 - May Day. I remember hanging baskets full of flowers on neighbors' doors when I was little, and again when the girls were little. Happy day, celebration of fertility and spring. It is full spring here, garden growing and wild flowers bright, trees full fresh green, afternoons warm, nights still cool.

Victoria, happy day to you too! Your spring sounds lovely. We are behind you, of course, but it is still glorious - the flowering trees, redbud and dogwood, and the bright green shoots of leaves that have so suddenly come out in the last two weeks.

Mama,

It makes me sad that I don't remember hanging baskets on the neighbors doors! Why did we stop? That's a sweet sweet tradition. (And of course here I think of doing it with Mira).

Thank you for our garden and Zachy's radish at passover and even our "Little House on the Prarie" bonnets.

I think one of the greatest legacies you've left in me is an appreciation and mindfullness of the seasons. I imagine myself playing "blind child" on the way home from your funeral... and waking my own children to show them an especially brilliant moon.

I love you so.

I remember hanging baskets full of flowers on neighbors' doors when I was a child also. Now I hear nothing at all about this custom here any more. But then again on May 1 here there are hardly any flowers yet. LOL
